Type 2 Remission Without a GLP-1: What the Research Actually Says

By: Ray Taylor. Not a Doctor.

Maybe you just left an appointment with a prescription for a weekly shot and a quiet feeling in your gut that says wait, is this the only way. You are not being difficult. You are asking a fair question. Before you sign up for something you may be on for the rest of your life, you want to know if there is another road, and whether anybody has actually studied it. So let me answer that the honest way, with what the research says and what it does not.

I am not here to trash the shot. If you are on one, or you decide to start one, that is between you and your doctor, and I will show you below that the drugs do real things. What I want you to walk away with is that the research on food, fasting, and weight loss is real too, and that remission without a prescription is a documented outcome, not a fairy tale.

First, what “remission” actually means

This matters, because the word gets thrown around loosely. The American Diabetes Association put a real definition on it. Remission means an A1C under 6.5 percent, held for at least three months, with no glucose lowering medication. Not managed. Not medicated down. Off the meds and still under the line.

That is a high bar. It is also the exact bar the research below is measured against, so keep it in mind as the numbers go by.

What the shot genuinely does, said plainly

I promised honest, so here is the strongest case for the drug, up front.

In a large trial called SELECT, semaglutide cut major cardiovascular events by about 20 percent in people who were overweight and already had heart disease. Worth knowing as you read that number: the people in that trial did not have Type 2. That is still a real result and I am not going to wave it away. While you take these drugs, they also pull your A1C, blood pressure, and blood sugar down, often fast.

So the fair summary is this. The shot works while you take it. The honest catch, the part your appointment may not have covered, is what happens when you stop, and whether it touches the root of the problem. I laid out that fine print in a separate post, the honest fine print on the shot. This post is about the other door.

What the research says about remission without a drug

Here is the part almost nobody hands you.

The DiRECT trial put people with Type 2 on a structured weight loss program, no diabetes drug doing the work. Just under half reached remission at one year. At two years about a third were still in remission. At five years it was around 13 percent. Read that honestly. The number falls over time, and remission gets harder to hold the longer you go. But a documented road to remission with no prescription is exactly what that trial mapped.

The Virta study is the other one worth knowing. In their one year results, 60.3 percent of participants got their A1C under 6.5 percent on no medication or on metformin only. Again, that is real people crossing the ADA line without a shot doing it for them.

Neither of those is my result and I am not going to pretend it is. They are the scaffolding. They are the proof that the mechanism is sound. Lower the load on your body, and the body can start listening to insulin again. Your liver stops dumping so much sugar. That is not magic. That is physiology, and it has a paper trail.

Why this is not a fairy tale for me either

I need to be careful here, because my story is one man’s story, not a study, and not a promise to you.

I came off all three of my diabetes medications, including insulin, and I rebuilt my body with food, fasting, and movement. My A1C went from 11.7 to 5.4 over about four years, and I am on zero diabetes medication today. I lost 50+ pounds along the way.

Now hear me clearly, because this is the most important paragraph on the page. Stopping my medication was my decision and my risk, and it is not a green light for you. I am not a doctor. Do not change a single thing about your medication because a man on the internet did. You do that with your physician, in the room, together.

What I am telling you is that the door the research describes is a door I actually walked through. The trials say it is possible. I am one of the faces on the other side of it.

So which door is for you

I am not going to tell you the shot is wrong for everybody. For some people, especially with existing heart disease, that 20 percent is a serious argument, and only your doctor can weigh it for your body.

What I refuse to let happen is for you to think the shot is the only door, because the research plainly says it is not. There is a second door. It has no monthly refill, no needle, and nothing anyone can cancel. When it holds, it holds on its own. The odds are not guaranteed and they get harder over the years, but the door is real, it is studied, and it is open.

You do not have to decide the whole thing today. You just have to know you have a choice.

If you want the exact first day I used to start walking through that second door, get the free 24 Hour Reset guide here.
