If you have ever had a fasting blood test come back high and thought “but I did not even eat,” I want to walk you through it, because that exact thing happened to me and nobody explained it. On a lab draw on July 6, 2022, my fasted glucose was 273. I had not eaten. So how does a number get that high on an empty stomach? That question is worth answering, because the answer tells you what is actually broken, and once you know what is broken, you know what to work on.
What a fasting glucose actually measures
A fasting glucose is your blood sugar measured after you have gone without food, usually overnight into the morning. The whole point of the test is to catch your blood sugar at its calmest, when there is no meal pushing it up. So a fasting number is supposed to be the floor, the low point, the resting reading.
Here is the part people miss. When you are not eating, your body does not just run out of sugar. Your liver keeps a steady supply going, releasing a little sugar to keep you running through the night. In a body that is working right, insulin keeps that release in check, like a hand easing off the gas. The fasting number stays in a healthy range.
So when your fasting number is high, it is not telling you about your breakfast. It is telling you about your overnight. It is telling you that even at rest, with no food in you, your blood sugar will not come down to where it should.
Why mine was 273 on an empty stomach
Plain language, no fog. In Type 2, your body stopped listening to insulin, and your liver keeps dumping sugar into your blood even when you have not eaten. The hand that is supposed to ease off the gas is not being heard. So the liver keeps releasing sugar overnight, the insulin cannot rein it in, and you wake up to a number like 273 with nothing in your stomach to blame.
That is what a high fasted number is really showing you. Not that you ate something wrong last night. That your body is not handling sugar at rest. It is a window into the machine, not a report card on your dinner.
I want to be careful and precise here, because I will not be loose with numbers. The 273 was a lab draw, a single dated reading from July 6, 2022. I am not telling you what my number is on any given morning, and you should be suspicious of anybody who tells you their blood sugar sits at one steady number every day. It moves. What matters is not one morning. What matters is the trend over time, and the trend is what the A1C measures.
What actually brings a fasted number down
If a high fasting number comes from a liver that keeps dumping sugar and a body that stopped listening to insulin, then the work is to get the body listening again and give it a rest. Here is what I leaned on, and why each one touches that exact problem.
- A shorter eating window. When you stop eating earlier and give your body a longer stretch without food, you give your insulin a rest instead of working around the clock. Over time that helps the body start listening again. If you are new to this, you start gentle, something like a twelve hour overnight window, and build from there. You do not jump in the deep end.
- Walking, especially after meals. When your muscles work, they pull sugar straight out of your blood through a door they can open without needing insulin to beg. Walking is the cheapest, most powerful lever I found, and it costs nothing but your shoes.
- Fiber. Real fiber, from beans and vegetables, slows the sugar spike from a flood down to a drip, so your body is not getting slammed in the first place.
None of that requires a prescription or a doctorate. It requires somebody to tell you the truth about what a high fasted number is, which is what I wish I had gotten.
Where the number went
I am not going to pretend one lever dropped my number on one day, because that is not how this works and I will not make it up. What I can give you is the dated trend. My A1C went from 11.7 in July of 2022 to 5.5 in March of 2026, with food, fasting, and movement, and zero diabetes medication, over about three and a half years. You can read the 11.7 phone call here and where I am now at 5.5 here. Those are lab draws with dates, not a slogan.
Here is the honest part. Remission is what happened for me, and I cannot promise you my exact result. But that scary fasting number is not a verdict. It is information. It is your body telling you exactly what it needs help with, and the things that help are things you can start on without a pharmacy.
