Just diagnosed? Here's what to do for the next 24 hours.
Nobody handed me a plan when I was diagnosed. I waited five years and my number climbed to 11.7 before I finally did something. You don't have to wait. This is the first thing I'd do, and it starts today.
They told me once diabetic, always diabetic.
11.7% to 5.5%. Lab-documented. No medication. Three and a half years.
What I did in one day.
One number broke open. Drag the marker to walk through it.
- STOPPED EATING AT 6 PM. Last bite the night before. Water only after that.
- 5 AM READING: 300+ mg/dL. Fasted overnight. The number was still north of 300.
- WALKED 18,000 STEPS. Florida heat. Still fasted. No pill.
- 2 PM READING: 196 mg/dL. Down over 100 points. The protocol did this.
This is what is actually wrong.
None of these work alone. All three is the protocol. The next three cards take you through each one.
Real food does not have a mascot.
Every carb I eat gets broken down into glucose and dumped into my bloodstream within minutes. When I eat real food, the dump is slower, the spike is smaller, and my exhausted pancreas finally gets a break. When I eat processed food, I am pouring gasoline on the fire I am trying to put out.
"Making lasting changes to your diet isn't just about adding healthy foods, that is simply not enough. There are foods, especially if you are living with Type 2 Diabetes, that are doing you actual harm. These foods must go."
It is not just sugar. It is the hidden sugar in foods marketed as healthy. Granola bars. Flavored yogurt. Low-fat sauces. I had cleaned up the obvious junk and was still spiking. The second layer of healing only happened when I cut the foods I did not even know were sugar bombs.
"Tomorrow your family is going to ask why you are not eating bread. The book has the script I used."
Insulin drops. The body cleans house.
As long as I keep eating, my insulin stays elevated and my body never gets the signal to use stored fuel or repair anything. When I fast past about twelve hours, glycogen in my liver runs out, insulin drops sharply, and my body flips to burning fat. At roughly eighteen to twenty-four hours, autophagy kicks in. My cells literally start eating their own damaged parts and recycling them. Including the cellular junk that helped cause the insulin resistance in the first place.
"Think of autophagy as your cell's internal housekeeping, recycling, and quality control program all rolled into one. The word literally means self-eating. Your body, when you enter autophagy, literally begins to heal itself, by eating up all of the trash."
"Hour 13 is going to come back tomorrow. So is the shame spiral. The book is what I do when it does."
Read the full storyMy muscles do not need insulin to pull sugar out of my blood.
Every other tool, food, fasting, even medication, works through insulin. Movement does not. When my muscles contract, they activate a separate, non-insulin-dependent pathway that pulls glucose directly from my bloodstream for fuel. That means even with insulin-resistant cells, walking still works. The more muscle I have, the bigger the sponge.
"This vague advice is hollow. It lacks specifics, guidance, and crucially, it fails to convey the importance that purposeful movement holds, especially when combined with dietary changes. In my experience, exercise wasn't just helpful; it was the missing piece of the puzzle. Gaining muscle, walking everyday, combined with fasting and cleaning up my food was the non magic 'magic pill' that changed my metabolism, and my life, forever."
Movement works without requiring weight loss first. Most people think they have to lose 30 pounds before exercise will help. The glucose-pulling effect happens on day one, in the first walk, before any scale moves.
"For years I heard 'diet and exercise' mumbled at the end of every doctor's visit. Nobody told me why. The walks that built me are in the book. Every one of them."
Your numbers. Your proof. Hide nothing.
Punch in your baseline and your post-walk reading. The drop is yours.
The number is yours. Take it to your spouse. Take it to the next visit.
I felt every one of these.

Hour 24 is the proof. The protocol is every day after.
The protocol was the first 24 hours. The book is the next three and a half years. Day 30 is where most people relapse. Day 90 is when the doctor tries to put you back on metformin. Day 180 is when your spouse stops asking. The book is what I did every single day in between.
- THE FOOD. What I ate when the fast broke. The plate that became Kinda Vegan, Kinda Not.
- THE FASTING. The 48 hours that changed how my cells reacted to insulin.
- THE MOVEMENT. Every walk that mattered. The 13,500-a-day target. The days I did not want to.
